I conducted a survey the other day of two gentlemen. One was a Hickory and the other a well traveled RVer who has been all over the country. I asked them if they understood what inner/outer meant. Not a clue. It is the poorest excuse for road signs I have ever seen. They should have an explanation of this moronic method on state maps they hand out at the welcome centers. Who ever dreamed this idea up was a ditz.

I think the State decided to use INNER and OUTER now instead of the old EAST and WEST signage and (in typical NCDOT fashion) they just haven't updated them so it just makes things more confusing than they really need to be.

Hey don't get mad at our drivers. Guess what, most of them aren't native Charlotteans anyway, haha. Traffic is really bad. I agree with the terrible design of a lot of the road especially I77. Whoever thought that having drivers attempt to merge onto the interstate and exit the interstate at the same place was a good idea had to be "on something". One problem is that no one ever anticipated the growth of Charlotte. The infrastructure cannot keep up with the influx of new people coming in. I know for new people coming in things are probably confusing. I never pay attention to the inner outer thing I just look at the name of the road I am trying to exit on.
