Traffic from Huntersville to Uptown Charlotte can be bumper to bumper and sitting still unless you leave early or work out some other route than I-77

Husband travels from Mooresville (about 15 miles north of Huntersville) each day.If he leaves just before 7 it takes him around 40 mins to Southend area.
Between 7 and 8 it can take him over an hour.
Going south- I77 changes from 2 lanes to 3 lanes plus HOV around J18 (this may not be exact, but it is just South of Huntersville anyway) so traffic tends to move more quickly after that. Unfortunately the volume of traffic coming on at the 3 Huntersville junctions is a problem, but depending on where you were in Huntesville it may be possible to take an aternative route first and join the I77 further South, but don't know if that would make the journey any quicker.
Someone who lives in the area may be able to help out.
