You wife is sure this was a big black vulture? I have never seen vultures here - but I have in other areas outside the city.

Times are tough - maybe the vultures are feeling it, too, lol.

What your wife saw was probably a turkey vulture. They are very common in the area.

North American Vultures (Cathartidae)

There are other types of vultures in the area but you might be fooled. They tend to disguise themselves in street clothes and hang around street corners and bars looking to prey on unsuspecting females. Turkey vultures are harmless, but proceed with caution when around the others.

LOL! Yeah, I have seen those vultures . . . haven't been fooled yet!!!

We have a two beautiful red shouldered hawks at our house. They are amazing to watch go after prey. They are not even afraid of us anymore. They will sit in a tree only feet away from us. They keep an eye on us but they are not startled when we are nearby.

Vultures are just kinda nasty, but I guess something needs to be around to clean up the roadkill.

Bank of America and former Wachovia roadkill seems to be the preferred fare in Myers Park. Formerly "deer in caught in the headlights" of corporate "right-sizing"! They are often found near houses that are currently "on the market"!

hahahahahaha...

vultures are very common here. My son had a baby vulture in his front yard over Christmas one year. There is a nest near to his house in an old, abandoned barn.

He lives in Wesley Chapel.

Actually, there are two types of vultures in the area. The American Black Vulture and the Turkey Vulture, but the Turkey Vulture is more common. The Turkeys are easily distinguished by the red coloring of their head.

Despite their disgusting habits, these are large and fascinating birds to watch if you ever see one from your car window. Oh, those groups of large birds lazily flying in the sky on hot summer days are usually vultures.
