On the eve of the playoffs, guess who is featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week? Mariano. Therefore, there is NO WAY the yankees will win this year. (Thanks SI! Go Sox!)

I'm not sure how you can pin it on one guy, for many reasons. Nevertheless, I don't really see it as a funk. It's no mystery; in the past, we just didn't have the pitching, nor the team chemistry.

We're a much better team now.....with many homegrowns producing, jovial personalities (Swish), etc. This team just has more fun (i.e. Burnett's pies) and obviously better chemistry. Go Yanks!

Ok, let me set the stage for you. Yankees up 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th. All Mariano had to do was to pitch 1 scoreless inning. Here is the recap...what a disaster....ballgame.

Mark Grace led off with a single, and pinch-runner Dave Dellucci advanced to second when Rivera threw Damian Miller's bunt into center field, with Miller reaching first. Jay Bell bunted into a force out at third for the first out, forcing Dellucci at third.

Tony Womack stepped to the plate, the owner of the hit that won Game 5 of the National League Division Series for the Diamondbacks. After working the count to 2-2, Womack lined a double into the rightfield corner to score pinch runner Midre Cummings with the tying run and sending Bank One Ballpark into a frenzy. Rivera then hit Craig Counsell with a pitch to load the bases.

Luis Gonzalez was next up, and he blooped a single over the Yankees' drawn-in infield to win the game and the series.

Yes it is a funk. You made the playoffs in '02 and got spanked against the Angels. '03 you had Mr Steroid Roger Clemens who gave you no effort in the playoffs. '04, I'm not even going to go there..... '05 you lost again to the Angels...

Shall I continue? Of course it was a funk after that series...you had the talent but they couldn't get it done.

Homegrowns are overrated. Cashman hit the Jackpot w/his trades for CC, Texiera, & Burnett..those are the meat of your team. If those deals don't pan out, forget it.

And btw any Yankee fan knows the season starts in October. The yankees always have a great regular season w/their $200M payroll, but if they don't win the world series, the season is a failure.

What is a "funk?" Could you be more vague? It's really not that big of a mystery. We can't win them all.

No need to set the stage, I watched it. It's simply ridiculous and near-sided to pin a game much less a series in any sport on one guy/one play etc.

You're trying to tell me the mentality of what I am? You can't have a "season" in October without a successful regular season. Don't talk to me about payrolls: Angels are right there, Red Sox (paying 50 million just to TALK to a guy). The Marlins, with the lowest payroll, and the Diamondbacks, one of, beat us, so quit crying about payroll. Baseball is a business. They're all overpayed, but it is what it is.

I don't advocate building an allstar team. Did you not read my previous post or did you not understand it? Homegrowns are overrated??? To name a few: Bernie Williams, Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Hughes, Cano, Cabrera, who are all/were starters....overrated?!?!

Who is your team? The Angels? Create a thread because you have no idea what you're talking about here and are obviously just disgruntled.

GO YANKS!

LOL at no idea what I'm talking about. No need to get mad that Mariano blew it. He's a great pitcher but he lost that series bottom line..surprised even a homer like you can't come to grips w/that. Regarding payrolls, in MAJORITY of cases the more you spend, the better your chances of making playoffs. Of course you will have teams that have small payrolls but they very rarely are there day in and day out. No argument there.....

Yes, you have someone homegrown guys, but w/o CC burnett & Texiera & Arod, the team is avg at best.

Again, the season starts now. No win in the world series, the season is a failure.....
