Food Lion, Bi-Lo in merger talks (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/breaking/story/986015.html - broken link)
Quote:
Delhaize said it intends to integrate BI-LO's shops into its Food Lion chain of shops.
Delhaize said the offer was subject to bankruptcy court approvals and that it hoped to complete a transaction after obtaining a non-appealable sale order from the court.
A representative for BI-LO could not be immediately reached for comment.
Not sure how I feel about this. I don't shop at Bi-Lo . . . but I do buy specials at Food Lion every week. What do you all think will happen if they merge? Higher quality? Higher prices? Consolidate locations and shut down a lot of stores?
I occasionally shop Bi-Lo. Mostly shop Food Lion though that might change once I move. It will mean corporate and retail consolidation. Some stores will probably close. Some people will lose jobs. I would have no idea on price changes.
I doubt quality will increase. I suspect the bi-lo's, where there are nofood lions, and that in itself will be a trick, will convert to food lions, and the rest will be scuttled.
I shop at Food Lion as well but I really like Bi-lo. There are two 24 hour stores in Steele Creek and from there are always people in them when I go. I never understood why there are two stores in the area. There is one Food Lion (closes at 11pm)
They have great produce and I love the fresh cut fruit available throughout the day. There is a hot food and salad bar open during lunch hours. I've found that Bi-lo has a much better selection than Food Lion and the prices aren't as high as Harris Teeter. The carry things that my closest Food Lion doesn't. For example Kashi Entrees. Even Walmart has those.
I expect that Food Lion will close some of the Bi-lo stores and convert others. The quality of Food Lion stores will probably remain the same.
This has got me wondering now too. In Lancaster, we have 2 Food Lions & 2 Bi-Lo's. Wonder if the Bi-Lo's will become Food Lion?
