Anyone been there lately? Wondering if it is as great as it used to be?

TIA

I went a few months ago with a group from my office. I had heard that it had great food and I was excited to try their house ranch sauce. I don't really know what I was expecting but I didn't think it was worth it for the amount of money we paid. There was 10 of us - the drinks bill was kept separate - and our bill was about $800.

Did the Ranch House close? Does anyone know why?

Yes it closed, as I understand it they were unfortunately victims of the economy.

I ate there once, at least 15 years ago. It wasn't memorable, meaning I don't remember anything about it, so I must not have been too excited about it.

As for closing, sure, the economy played a part. But is Wilkinson Blvd a place many people think of when considering a good steakhouse? I doubt it. My guess is that the older crowd who had been supporting the place had moved on, and the younger crowd didn't know it was there.

It was definitely an "old-school" steakhouse. A bit surprised to hear it has closed, as it was pretty much the only decent restaurant in the immediate vicinity of the airport.

Most all of Charlotte's good steak houses have disappeared to be replaced by chains, even expensive ones, which don't provide the same level of cooking and atmosphere that the old local places did. One of my favorites was Staley's Steakhouse on Wilkenson. The "Charcoal Room" was decorated in 1960s modern and had that look from an old James Bond movie. Some might also remember Cosmo Steak House (populux and no relationship to the similar named place in downtown) I like eating there as well. At one time there were numerous other charcoal steak houses around Wilkenson and Morehead. All these places would marinate their steaks before cooking which seems to be a lost art now.

The steaks were great and were unmatched by anything I've seen at Mortons and similar.

Went there to eat this time last year and found it closed. First, I thought everyone might have been on summer break and then I realized Charlotte lost another landmark, like The Andersons and others.

The food lately hadn't been as good as it use to be, mainly, the steaks. Still, you'd be hard pressed to find anything that rivaled either their legendary cocktail sauce or home made blue cheese dressing. I'd go just for those two items.

There's something to be said about Old School places like these. They seem to be disappearing one after another. Darn shame.

Beef n Bottle still packs them in. They were lucky to be on South rather than Wilkenson.
