Difficulty of Transferring to a Magnet School
I have a question about the ease (or difficulty) in transferring to a magnet school in Charlotte. I am thinking about moving to Charlotte and would love for my (by then) second grader to get in the French Immersion program at Smith Language Academy. I figure that it is probably easier to get in as a second grader than a kindergartner, but what if I don't move until the July before the school year starts? Is that option then closed?
Oh, I should add that my child is currently in a language immersion program.

There is no "transferring in" to a magnet school I am afraid. These spots are won by lottery only, usually in January. You would need to be applying right now, something you can't do until you have an address in Charlotte, sorry.

Is your child currently in a French immersion program? If he is, and if a spot is available, it is possible to make a transfer. We moved to Charlotte in the summer 2008. I applied to Smith Academy before the move, in April 2008, basically as soon as I found a place to rent and had an address in Charlotte. My daughter started in 2nd grade at Smith the following fall. She was previously attending a French school.

Glad that worked out for you! I have never heard of this happening before but I am glad you could give our OP some hope

Thanks Love Mountains! The transfer is possible as long as the child has the requested level in the language of immersion and a spot is available.
Lemur, as soon as you have an address here in Charlotte, contact Ann Hardy, she is the Registrar at Smith and she should be able to help you.
As far as I remember, I had to apply to Smith Academy through the CMS Student Placement office. My application has been be rejected and my child assigned to our local school (this seems to be systematic). I called Ann and explained the situation. As a spot was available, they were able to accept her and did the transfer from her home school to Smith relatively easily.
Good luck!

I guess magnet schools don't have any trouble attracting students?

Many of my friends got into magnet schools during the summer.
But if you PERSONALLY GO THE THE SCHOOL, you could try to schedule and appointment and they might have a spot available. Just DON'T call. They might interview you and your child and if his grades are sufficient then they might give you a spot if you're lucky.

Thanks everyone, this has been so helpful. I called the school and spoke with someone (probably Ann Hardy) who was terrific! She gave me hope.
