Zoo in Charlotte?
Looks as if this group wants to build a zoological park for Charlotte near the river. I say if they can pull it off then go for it. Looks like they have some charity poker this weekend as a fund raiser for it.
I'm wondering why they might want to do this given the excellent Riverbanks zoo just down the road in Columbia, and the NC Zoological Park.

Both the zoos you mention are fairly close and great zoos. This plan is no different, and seems like overkill to me. I don't think we need another zoo in this area, when there are plenty of areas that are quite far from a decent zoo.

Yeah, I would prefer to see an aquarium. There isn't one of those close by.

I was thinking the same thing. I really like zoos but you have 2 great ones in a relatively short distance to Charlotte.
The closest aquarium is in Wilmington and its not even that great. Atlanta has a fantastic one.

closest aquarium is in Charleston and it is a pretty good one. A lot of nice exhibits there as well.

I was thinking the same thing. It would great if they could partner with Lazy 5 some kind of way and just look to expand that operations.

My idea of convenience is not driving an hour to go to a zoo or an aquarium. We are talking about two different entities. The zoo will be build with private funds. The aquarium will be built with city funds. If an aquarium is built, it should have another venue attached as they do in other large cities that have aquariums. Perhaps an omnimax would be a good idea or a wax museum as someone mentioned before. I do agree that the Charleston aquarium and the Columbia Zoo are nice places, but I would visit the zoo at least once a month. Being a hundred miles away, once a decade.

I would LOVE to have a zoo in Charlotte! I always used to have a zoo membership and would go about once a month, I really miss that! I don't see why we wouldn't want a zoo here, seems like Charlotteans find it easy to say "oh just drive over to SC" but wouldn't it be better for people to have a zoo and keep their money in Charlotte?
That being said, the website seems a little sketchy. Maybe it's not, but I find it odd that it doesn't say who they are, how they are planning to build a zoo, or what their affiliations are. I would ONLY support a zoo if it was accredited by the AZA, it's odd that they don't mention affiliation with the NC Zoological Society. Also odd that the only funding/fundraising they mention is a poker tourney. Just seems either sketchy or like a few wingnuts that think they can raise enough money for a zoo through poker tourneys and bakesales. If you google the guy in charge, not much comes up other than poker stuff and this zoo thing, leading me to believe he's not a zoologist or expert of any kind... Weird.
