Has anyone been to the Balloon fest in Statesville?
Carolina BalloonFest, Statesville NC USA - Hot Air Balloon Festival, 50+ Balloons, North Carolina Wines, Balloon Glow, Arts & Crafts, Food, Live Entertainment October 23rd thru 25th
Come experience the beauty and wonder of 50 magical hot air balloons decorating the sky! And don't miss the Saturday evening hot air balloon glow. Check out the balloon festival schedule for full details of each day’s events.
Bring lawn chairs and blankets (please leave pets and coolers at home) to enjoy the beautiful Carolina autumn weather as the backdrop to the sights and sounds of colorful hot air balloons.
This sounds like fun
The Saturday and Sunday balloon competition starts early 8:30 & 8:00 but it looks like by the schedule a full fun day. Wine testing for those who care

Went one year, it looked like a regular carnival from the road. Sat in traffic for about an hour or so only to be told...(after I specifically asked) ...sorry, no balloons today...too windy!!
(what made it bad was that I had my best friend from Chicago with me and this was to be a special tourist-y thing. The lack of notification was pretty embarrassing)

Yes, it was very, very crowded. The line (and there was only one) was very long.

probably mid-afternoon. My friend that lives up there had a heart attack and we went to see him first in the hospital. The plan was we were going to the balloon festival while Gary slept and then return to the hospital...it all went wrong, however.
Actually, if all goes well, I will be in Statesville tomorrow eve. too...to see the (now healthier) same friend!! we are going to Outback for dinner tomorrow around 6-ish...

Wife and I have it on the "must-do" list this year. Not sure if we are going both 24 & 25? We really want to see the Balloon Glow...

Does anyone else have any reviews of this? Or what the best time to go is? I am a couple of hours away so I know we aren't making the 8am competition...

We drove there, and only one balloon was even out there. This was about 3-4 years ago. Wx seemed fine, not too windy. Marked it on our list of "not worth the trip".
The other latest "not worth the trip" discovery? The Charlotte BBQ festival (which we attended on Friday night in search of BBQ but only found it from your typical festival stands, nothing special). Funniest quote from THAT disaster of an activity, as we left "BBQ Alley" frustrated by the lack of actual BBQ available just people cooking for the next day's competition, "Odd. No barbecue in 'barbecue alley'".
