I would disagree with that. I work Uptown and live in Matthews. I am 13 miles from my work. Concord is definitely further than 13 miles. I guess it might depend on which parts of Concord/Matthews you are comparing.

Agreed,

Matthews is without a doubt closer to uptown than Concord. Besides that has anyone ever tried to drive North from uptown during rush hour? It is IMO a true test of will and patience. Maybe the poster should look in Madison Park. There are older houses there and it is still close in to shops and uptown. Belmont is nice too although it is difficult there to get a place (in the historic area). People tend to snatch these up pretty quickly when they are up for sale.

Maybe check out Plaza-Midwood? I don't know about a "historic" area, but there are lots of walkable restaurants/stores/etc. Not sure on the availability of 1/4 acre or larger lots, either, but you should definitely be able to find something in your size/price range.

I think Concord is further from uptown, but in my experience it seems often quicker to get to uptown from there than from Matthews.

The Concord town area is nice, but it's a pretty small area of historic/nice homes. If you go just a couple blocks away the houses aren't so nice and the area is no longer walkable. I really like the area though, just depends on what scale you're looking for!

Belmont is great but I don't think you can find what you need downtown. You can in other parts of the town. Then you could walk or drive to the downtown district. That area is expensive. I know some homes in the historic district are $1 mil+.

Walkable area with active businesses, affordable homes with character and a yard (less than 300k for at least 1500sq ft. and .2 acre+), safe, close to town.

I am a Concord native... I know of a community in Concord that has the historic feel but modern. Would that type be acceptable?

These 2 are great options in Belmont:

502 Ferrell Ave, Belmont, NC
  • House For Sale: $114,900
  • 3 Beds
  • 2.0 Baths
  • 1,700 sqft
  • Days on Zillow: 54
112 Lee St, Belmont, NC
  • House For Sale: $185,000
  • 4 Beds
  • 2.0 Baths
  • -- sqft
  • Days on Zillow: 205
The Lee St one was on our short list.

Those are not downtown. Very close so again the OP could walk or take a short drive to downtown. There are many homes 1500+ sq ft homes, under $300,000, on .2+ acres in Belmont but not many in historic district.

We're interested in a neighborhood or suburb with a historic walkable area and affordable price point. Myers Park and Dilworth are unfortunately out of our range! A friend mentioned Concord, which looks pretty and seems to meet the criteria, but we don't know much about it, crime, economy etc. and it's a bit far from the city center. Can anyone give more info on Concord, and/or suggest another area we should consider? We're grateful for any direction here as it's hard to find this info on the web. Criteria - Walkable area with active businesses, affordable homes with character and a yard (less than 300k for at least 1500sq ft. and .2 acre+), safe, close to town. Could you please include the location of the neighborhood or town center so I can map it? Thank you!!
I think Belmont is your #1 option
