They are found in all the lower 48, if memory serves me correctly. I've never seen a live one here, but I saw a dead one a while back right past Concord Mills, on 85.

Yeah, they are everywhere. My Mom called me last night to tell me there were five in her front yard, in Ohio. Probably stalking the cats and chickens, idk if they'd mess w/ a horse? She scared them off tho.

So glad to know I'm not crazy! I bet you and I saw the same one cross Mallard Creek Church Rd. at night! It was too big to be a fox and wasn't a dog. Everyone thought I was making it up.

My research said that the coyotes breeding time is in January-February so I don't understand the extra activity right now.
As far as going after a horse--probably not likely unless it was a small or injured horse and only then if there were several coyotes--not a single one. Single coyotes go after small animals like mice, cats, small dogs, rabbits etc. They even eat veggies and fruits out of peoples gardens/farms.

Default Coyotes in Charlotte!

The coyotes are living in urban Charlotte as well. There is a pack living in a small swatch of woods over off Sharon Hills Road, and a large, solitary coyote was seen on Montford Drive on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon. Animal Control will not remove them. It will take a child or small pet being attacked and/or killed before the city will do anything about them. Coyotes have never been indigenous to North or South Carolina (unlike their near-extinct cousin the Red Wolf), and were introduced to help control the rampant deer population. This has not happened, and now we are facing a coyote problem.
