Honest, reliable auto mechanic near uptown?
Can anyone recommend an honest mechanic near uptown or just south of it? I have just moved from Raleigh and need to find a new one that I can rely on. Thanks

Just took my truck to Stainback's Auto. They're just off of South Blvd, and practically across the street from the Scaleybark Lynx station. I was extremely pleased with the work, the price and their helpfulness. There were two options to try for fixing the issue - the cheaper one might or might not work, the other entailed at least a partial rebuild of the transmission. I had been quoted $500-$2200 (yep, not a typo) for the work I "needed" done, although the place couldn't tell me what the work was that needed to done without a minimum charge of $500, and strong implications that would be on the higher end of that range - and they wouldn't even discuss trying the cheaper option first, even though that was the only error code showing up. Stainback's offered me both options, and I opted to try the cheaper one first, which worked. They fixed it for $712.
I went based on a recommendation from a friend who has been a customer for quiet a few years and they have been very happy with the service.

I recommend Gerard's Tire. They are on 6th St. and have always been great to me. I drop my car off in the morning, walk to work and then pick it up in the afternoon. I recently found a nail in my tire and took it over there at 5:10. They close at 5:30 but were still able to repair the tire and get me back on the road. They also fixed an issue for me that several other garages couldn't figure out.

Check out Woodie's on Palmer Ave. I think its Ave. JP has been good to me over the past few years.

i just got my oil changed @ Gerrard and it was quick and painless, like the other poster said they got it done same day. i've gone to Woodie's uptown and though they were very pleasant. oil change with some minor stuff (blown fuse in my cigarette lighter) and they took care of that free of charge. i think in both places, you aren't gouged on the labor ...
