you do not have to blow the lines out.just shut off the main valve & open the valves that are under cover.the valves are above ground.

It sounds like you have a pretty good tolerance for risk, and the consequences that come with it. The valves under the cover can be one of the first things to freeze along with the sprinkler heads, depending on their location. If located on the north side of the house, they will freeze more quickly.

Personally, I prefer the blow out method. You can do this yourself, but the compressors most home owners have access to have too little volume and too much pressure to get the job done properly. Be careful in you selection of methods.

The only time I get a crack is when my wife sticks a lawn holiday ornament into ground thru the irrigation pipe....
now 8 years and counting....hope my irrigation lines can make it through this week...8x 75= $600 savings in not winterizing,...I certainly will post if the cold damages my lines

I have 1 acre under irrigation (20 zones) and have never winterized. It's a pretty top notch system though. It's plumbed right off the main well line, which is always closed, unless I am using the system. I guess it all depends on your system.

Looks like I dodged a bullet, no issues with irrigation and the savings continue...

So what did you do for winter- do you just switch off the main irrigation line? Or do you also have to shut down the backflow preventer and the 'in ground' valves?
