Actually she will be working on a new site. We will be re-locating from Columbus Ohio.

I own a Fence Co that i will need to bring w/ me so we are trying to get good advise on where to live. I dont want to be up in Hickory trying to make a living I think it will be pretty hard. I will need Charlotte. So... we need to find something between Charlotte and Hickory. Lincolnton appears reasonable but really Gastonia appears better because I'll need to not only get there but get all the way around there.

I really need good information on the areas because I have a 5th and 7th grader. Were talkin about a median income of about 100k. Right now we live upper middle class suburban and we have mixed emotions about it. We really feel out of our element ,,, we are middle class folks.

We think we just want to rent right now because we already have 2 houses here and are trying to sell 1. We prefer a home for rent in a decent school district.

Any help would be appreciated. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

My opinion, if you are looking to lessen the "culture shock" of it, is that I would easily pick Hickory over Lincolnton or Gastonia. However you are correct in that it is a tough place to live if you have to come to Mecklenburg county (Charlotte). I would suggest that you might look at the map at the Lake Norman area to see how that might work for you instead.

If his wife is working in Hickory wouldn't that be one hell of a drive from Lake Norman?

Lake Norman is bounded by Catawba county where Hickory is located.

Ah ha, I see now. Did a mapquest from Sherrills Ford, about a 38 minute drive it says to Hickory. I was envisioning it differently.

I live in Pumpkin Center which is between Lincolnton and Denver. It takes me about 30 minutes to get into Hickory.

I've read that some of Lincoln County's schools are pretty good.

Look into Eastern Lincoln County. The Denver & Lincolnton areas would suit you nicely. Hwy 16 and/or Hwy 321 to Hickory is about 30 minutes, same for Hwy 16 to Charlotte or Hwy 321 to Gastonia. The schools are very good. My wife and I moved from Mecklenburg to Gaston and then here to Iron Station in Lincoln County. I don't see us moving far from where we are now, perhaps to slightly larger house in a few years, but it'd be hard to leave the neighborhood we've found.

we're in Sherrills Ford and it takes me 20 minutes to get to Hickory (US70 Near Sams Club). Takes me exactly 34 minutes (I time it) to get from my front doorstep to Charlotte-Douglas Airport. I take that route every week.

Are you looking to rent or buy? I can give you some pointers on where to look if you are interested.
