I did what was suggested earlier in this posting - during my student teaching I knew I wanted to move back to the Charlotte area. So basically I made a list of all the schools in CMS, Union, and Cabarrus county I would consider teaching at (taking into account location, student population, reputation, etc) and sent them a resume and cover letter. I attempted to put something specific to that school I'd found from their website or through word-of-mouth in each cover letter, especially for the schools I was really interested in. Some got just a form cover letter, though.

Here's the real trick though - I sent them out approximately 2 weeks before the spring job fairs. By that point, schools know what kinds of openings they're going to have and are ready to start interviewing, but they haven't been inundated by the masses at the fairs. I sent my resume to about 15 schools and heard back from 6 (most before the job fair, some later in the spring/summer). I went on 2 interviews before the job fair and had two more lined up to do at the fair before I went. Ultimately, I chose one of those, so I essentially walked into the job fair and back out with a job in under an hour.

Thanks so much for all the info Mom2jacknjess!! I'm currently a sub, even though I'm not called as often as I would like. I'm only looking at private schools in Clt currently, but obviously must expand my search to include public schools also. My email is rothfamily2@msn.com and I appreciate any help!
Thanks!

i will be looking to teach in North Carolina, either Charlotte or Raleigh, maybe Chapel Hill in a couple years, but I would be looking to teach ESL.

i know there were a couple language teachers on this thread.....do you know if there is a demand for ESL teachers in North Carolina? I have been told that they are in fact in demand, and that some of these positions even come with a signing bonus.

I am currently living in Eastern Europe (I am American), and by the time I get to NC, i will have about 4 1/2 years experience teaching ESL in private schools. I have a bachelor's degree (in science) and am TESOL certified.

From what I've read and heard from other teachers in NC, if I were to pass the Praxis II exam for ESL, I would be able to land a job via lateral entry, and then I would have 3 years to fulfill my 24 semester hours to get licensed.

any help/advice regarding this would be appreciated!

getting higher education is always a solution to job searching problems, but in my case, it's not helpful advice.

I will be relocating from europe to america, so i will need to arrive and get myself a job. i simply won't have the time or the money to work on a masters.

possibly in the future, i would consider it, if anything for the pay raise, but what i am really interested in is my chances of landing a job in the beginning, and the best way to go about it.

Your welcome! You might want to just fill out an application online so that if anything does come up, they will call you. What grade level are you interested in? If it is K-5, I have a few friends who are teachers. I'll let you know if I hear of anything. What areas are you interested in? My email address is Mom2jacknjess@gmail.com
