I can assure you, we're doing everything by the book

I guess the bigger issue from a 20,000 ft level is why people feel the need to drive over the posted speed limit in a residential community and how do we get people to recognize the fact that there are children in the area and hang up their damn cell phones and drive at a reasonable speed so that if a child does dart in front of them that they can stop safely.
Jake, Its not going to happen unfortunately. People come home at 6pm and their hungry and want dinner, see their family, yada yada yada.......they don't even think about going the speed limit unfortunately. Its only going to get worse as the years go by.

I'm not saying thats RIGHT (as I try to really stay within the 25mph in my development) but its reality. I hate it when I try to do the right thing and I have people up my butt trying to fly home.....

I've also heard that neighborhood Watch signs hurt a neighborhood because people will think there's a lot of crime.

I disagree with both of these. People know that people speed through all neighborhoods whenever they can and that there's crime everywhere.

What these say to me is that it's a neighborhood where folks are involved in improving the neighborhood. In Charlotte, 25 mph speed limits, speed humps, abd Neighborhood Watch Programs all require someone to go out and collect signatures on a petition or organize a meeting, and they require support of the residents.

What speed humps tell me is that people care enough to get involved and support their neighborhood.

Dave, not everyone shares your views on this. Even though you have a well thought out view, many people just see speed bumps and think "speeders" around...or the street is some kind of cut through. How do you know what potential home buyers are going to think?

Again, YOU may disagree, but many people don't think like you whether that's good or not...again, not trying to be confrontational, just advising on reality.

Years ago , in 1995 on Lawrence Orr Road. People would do upwards of 55 through there. One day , during the summer , a child was struck and killed. My former neighbor approached me regarding signing a petition , I obliged , and 3 months later , they put them in.

[quote=sheloveslife;11428956]Hi all. We live in Shannamara and I am most concerned with speeding. For the year we've lived here, I've yelled at passing speeding cars - which has gotten me nothing but a universal hand signal .

You bet you can...
Get a petition to lower the speed limit to 25 mph and for speed bumps from the local city roads commssion and start going door to door to get signatures. The speed limit is the big concern right now, as
most of your streets are 35mph. You can call police to set up speed traps after the limit has been lowered. It will take a few years for speed bumps to be approved.

Years ago, Charlotte lost an NBA player do to racing our streets.
You would think his wife would have learned from his tragic mistake. With her kids in the Denali, she was clocked at 53 mph on Ballantyne CC Drive posted at 25mph !!! It's all about attitude today.

It takes a set off balls to be proactive - Just Do it!

And it takes a special kind of ignorance to do things without thinking them through and understand the repercussions.

What may work in one neighborhood or street may not work in another.

At our last HOA meeting they told us we were getting speed bumps in our neighborhood as well as a posted speed sign of 25 b/c technically if the speed limit is not posted within city limits it's 35 (thank you DMV written driving test for that trivia!). I don't know how long this will all take.

I walk my kids to the bus early in the morning and I can't wait for speed bumps and signs and hopefully more police presence. There are some streets that many drivers ignore the stop signs and just speed on through, putting the kids at risk

perhaps one day you may have kids playing in your neighborhood and some bored civil engineer will be testing their new supercharger.

Well, I've offered myself up to the HOA to help in whatever way they need to get some sort of solution. We've gone the multiple stop sign route, I'm not sure what is next. I'll keep after them - something must be done.

Our friend's son was struck and killed in front of her house by a passing speeder (the kid's principle, sadly). . . and I have a 10 and 12 year old, so this issue is very real to me.

In a previous neighborhood, I've watched a car speeding down a hill and flip into someone's front yard. Thankfully, no one was outside in the yard at the time. Speed kills, and not necessarily always on the street itself.
