We were often in the bottom 25 percent of the advanced western nations. Our friends in England didn't do as well as we. Looks like they need to do a little work on their system. One must also consider that the U.S. is a nation of great diversity as in England. It should be expected that our scores would lag behind places like Sweden, Australia, or Japan. There are some great students in the U.S. but, unfortunately there are some horrible ones as well.
How do we compare to Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and China individually?
Generally, we were behind the more European industrial countries. Ones that were behind us most were Greece, Iceland, Spain, Scotland, New Zealand, Norway, and most Asian countries except Japan. Japan did not show up on the 12 grade ratings as they had completed those requirements a couple years before. England, Ireland, and Canada were around the same overall as the U.S. England was a bit behind. It was interesting that the U.S. was third in the world for fourth grade science.
I will say Education is "easier" if "easier" is defined as not having to memorize much, not having as many tests in classes, easier to get into. BUT, it is not less work- in fact I think it is more work! It's not difficult to understand the concepts- as in physics, chemistry, etc.- but it is more work- more research, more stuff to do....
