Hi,

I moved to the Lake Wylie Area and I am looking for a goor mechanic I can trust. I've heard of a few places around here but they don't have a great reputation at all.

Today I went to AAA auto care to get my A/C recharged. I was told they would take 2 hours to give a diagnose. 89 bucks and 4 hours later they told me that they needed to replace the evaporator (had a leak), and it was going to cost me 1,200 bucks. I did some research from the complimentary internet at AAA and the piece brand new is 200 bucks. And they told me it was expensive because they had to remove the dashboard. Does that cost 1000 bucks?

I will go for a second opinion and shop around for a bit. in the meantime stay away from AAA. They didn't even recharge my A/C but yes they did charge me for it.

Good Luck

My husband has only been there for a month yet has needed a mechanic twice, I found him a place near his apartment so he could walk home. They were great, helpful, found the problem (first time the car was fine by the time it got there and tests didn't show anything wrong, they didn't even charge a service fee, just gave him the car back free of charge) and fixed it at what we felt was a reasonable cost (fuel pump).

They apparantly have several locations, my husband used the one in uptown.

Hey there! As a South Floridian with a leaky AC in my car, I have had the exact same thing said to me about my evaporator . My mechanic fixed it in a much less temporary but much cheaper way. He flushed the AC with a sealent to seal the leak and then added more freon after that the AC held a charge perfectly. Yes, I still have a slow leak. But instead of doing the $1200 repair, They add the sealent and re charge the freon once a year for about $100.

See if you can find a guy who offers to fix it that way. Thats the one to go back to when its something serious

There's a great place on S Tryon right up from Lake Wylie called Arowinds Tire and Auto Service. It's a Gemini shop through Goodyear, but the family who runs it is awesome. I've had great luck with the, and they're very honest.

I know this may be too far for you, but Gus at H & H Motors (704-333-0628, 1909 South Blvd., near Tremont) is very honest IMO.
A friend recommended him to me when I moved here about a year ago, and he's been great.

I have a 20 year old Mazda, and he'll always advise me the best way to keep it running well for the least money (even if it costs him money in the short run).

I have been going to Hook Goodyear on South Blvd. at Seneca for the past 20 years with 3 different cars. All of the men that work there are professional, polite and honest.

They have always been able to fix my car quickly for a fair price. I would HIGHLY reccommend them.
