These playgrounds are also called Boundless Playgrounds. There is one in Shelby, NC and supposed to be one in Winston-Salem under construction.

The one mentioned at Idlewild Road park looks like it may be pretty good, as does the one in Gaston County.

The "true" universal playgrounds do not use mulch under the structure, they use a rubber type material that wheelchairs can be rolled on and childern (and adults!) with walkers can access. What if the child were fine, but the caregiver (mom, dad, grandma or grandpa..) used a wheelchair or walker, there still needs to be access, or the child cannot go to the park.

There are many other good components to have in these types of playgrounds, but I won't get into it. Unfortunately these things are more costly than the traditional playground underlayment, which, I imagine, is one of the reasons more playgrounds are not more fully accessible.

every playground I have ever seen in Charlotte looked like that picture. Maybe you just need to go to a parks and rec website?

There are some great playgrounds here in Charlotte, but specifically the universal ones are limited, at least in the general Charlotte area I've looked at so far.

For me specifically it's luckily not a matter of needing to find them but of wanting to find them b/c frankly they are safer in general and great fun for the kids. The wood ones sound cool too, especially the castle one in Gastonia that I just learned about.

I will look into some of the areas listed above. Thanks everyone!
