Since one poster caused some confusion with a previous post, suggesting these projects were "dead", thought I'd provide an update....
October 28th, 2009 "...Members of the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) voted unanimously to go after state and federal money for both a commuter rail line from uptown to Davidson (and possibly to Iredell County), and a light rail extension from uptown Charlotte to University City..."
And the prospects for the East/West street car line are looking up as well...

So this is the same group that voted this year to raise the Transit Tax another 1/2 percent and the state simply ignored them. Instead the state mass transit bill that passed this year specifically excluded Mecklenburg. So if this group doesn't have any pull with it's own state government why would the federal government take any notice?

You probably should stop commenting on transit issues. To date, you’ve only posted misinformation. First of all, the MTC does not have the authority to “raise taxes”. Second, a committee was set up to explore rather a new tax should be pursued and the answer was, uhhh, no…
Lastly, Mecklenburg was left out of the legislation you’re speaking of simply because “our on” delegation didn’t want to be included. Not that the state doesn’t support our transit efforts. But if we wanted to be included, we could, Mecklenburg could still seek a special bill from the General Assembly.

This is a false argument. I did not say the MTC had the authority to raise taxes however I should have been more clear. The MTC formally voted to ask the NC Legislature to allow Mecklenburg county to increase the transit tax by 1/2%. It's in their meeting minutes. The state ignored them. The point remains. However the proof is always in the pudding. Let me know when they have a real date for construction.
If you want to challenge anything I have said I will be glad to defend it, and I won't use silly articles from the local media either.

That does't make any sense at all. You said "they voted to raise the tax, and the state ingnored them". If they don't have the authority to raise taxes, how can the state ignore them? The state never considered it, it was our delegation that didn't want to be included. I think what you said was very clear, and all of your previous statements have been clear. Unfortunatley, they've been misstatements, as I said.
...I won't use silly articles from the local media either.
So, instead of sources, we'll just trust your intuitive insight?
Anyway...
etacarinae, I too am bummed at how far out an actual ride on the train seems to be. There's not a bus ride of mine that goes by where I wish I was on a light rail instead of stuck in traffic molasses! The important thing to remember is to not let our support die. It's a critical component of the project...without it, it will only add to the challenges of getting it built.
Nope I didn't say that either. If you want to challenge anything I have said then please do so and I am more than able to defend it.
Umm, ok, let’s see, you were wrong about…
1) The rail plans being dead
2) Where we are in the stages of the next two rail lines
3) The north suburban mayors not continuing to support the rail plans
4) The federal government not supporting our rail efforts
5) The ability of the MTC to levy new taxes
Should I go on? As I said before, it would be in your best interest to stop commenting on transit issues until you understand them better. Your track record speaks for itself.
