Hello,

It has been over a year since I went , but I'll return when it cools. Does anyone ever travel to this park? If not , are you somewhat versed in its existence?

Thanks!!

There is not much of this refuge that humans are allowed in unless you make it into one of the yearly tours or get onto the periodic deer culling. It's great that such a place exists in Mecklenburg. If you have access to a boat you can see a lot of this park from the river. There is actually a public boat landing that is also accessed on Neck Rd that you will pass by on the way to the refuge.

Lincoln county has placed the area across the river under similar restrictions so there is a pretty significant area now that remains in the natural state.

I've walked through there on several occasions. Last time I went , I actually made it to the river and an adjacent cove. It was amazing!! You could see the fish out to 50' from shore. Only drawback is that area is a prime spot to vanish without a trace or be attacked by rare bears or mountain lions. Especially going solo as everyone is scared to travel on my trips.

I've never tried to go beyond the fence as I assumed it was a violation. I think the biggest cat you would have to worry about is the bobcat and they usually don't bother humans unless provoked and they are cornered. It's very unusual, but occasionally a young male black bear will show up but they are really a rare event. Most are up closer to the mountains now.

The cove you saw is called Duck Cove.

No it's not a violation as far as I know. There is a birdwatching platform to the right of the parking lot.
