moving expenses from Boston to Charlotte? (movers, condo, house)

My family of 4 will be moving from Boston to Charlotte this spring. Can anyone provide any insight into approximate moving costs? Also, what type of moving options are there? We currently have a 4 bedroom house that is about 2700sq ft. I know that the cost is dependent upon the amount and weight of your things, but I was just wondering if anyone had gone through this process lately and what your total costs were?

Yes, a lot depends on a lot.

The wife and I used ABF(google them) and it cost right around $1400.00. ABF is a transportation company. They will drop off a trailer to your house, you, your husband, family and friends all load the trailer up. Once your done, give ABF a call and they pick up the trailer and transport it to your new location. Check out their website and FAQ's. I actually used them four times and everything always went smooth.

All tolled, our moving expense from NY was about $1800.00. Moving companies had quoted $2300.00, $2600 and one was $3500!!! We had about 2400 sq.ft..

Great answer Mike. I had a co-worker do the trailer drop-off thing and it went as Mike described. I've dealt with moving companies before and the thing is to get at least 3-5 (I'd even get more) quotes.

Did you have them pack? Who unpacks? What happens when you hit traffic..is that all on your dime for paying their time? Will they tow another car?

What is the drop-off day? I had a 18-wheeler crew pack my entire house, plus they stopped for someone elses's condo in the same truck. They gave me a 3-day window when they'd drop my stuff off and I think that's pretty standard.

We just moved from Boston about 2 weeks ago used ABC relocation, which is affiliated with Allied Van Lines. We had a 2 bd about 1200sqft along with a basement full of stuff and it was about 7600lbs. They did a good part of the packing, especially the fagile items and our cost was about $4700. So far I have found no damaged items or broken dishes. I was very pleased with our movers and experience.

I paid around $3000 to J&K Moving from DC to NC for a 1200 sq ft. condo with a large amount of items from storage. We packed everything ourselves.

We paid around $6500 to move from Boston to Charlotte in June 2008 (2400 sq. feet house, all the packing incl.). It was with United Van line. They were very professional and did a great job.
