Hello....currently living in Tampa Florida, and thinking about relocating to NC. We are going to check out all the major cities, but from online searches, etc, we think that living close to Charlotte is our best bet, because of industry and universities. We were looking at living in Davidson, because it seems like a great little community with good schools, and a small town feel. HOw much of a commute is it into the City of Charlotte? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Davidson is a great town. The commute can be a hike to downtown (maybe 45 or 50 mins) and further depending where you live in Davidson because parts of it are fairly far from the highway.
I live in the lake norman area and Davidson would be the only place I'd consider moving to, from where I am.
It is only 20 minutes with no traffic but there is almost always traffic so 45 to 50 sounds right. There is a nice commuter bus that takes you right downtown. It is a very nice area. Cute towns and the college offers a lot of cultural events.
My wife and I lived in Davidson for a year. We didn't care for it. Davidson is small and boring. What little there is to do there will get old fast, so you'll end up spending all your free time anywhere but Davidson.
Yes, it's "quaint and cute." However, that wears off.
As for the morning commute to Charlotte: 45 to 50 minutes is AVERAGE. There will be many days where the commute is much longer due to standstill traffic. There were many days that I spent over 40 minutes to go from Davidson to Huntersville (I-77 exit 30 to exit 25!) The evening commute is about the same.
If you Like the water ,this is the place. The drive to charlotte is 22 miles ,but traffic does get unruly at times if there is a wreck or rush hour. We personally never go to Clt anymore ,everything is here in terms of shopping and restaurants etc. If you need to work there every day the drive can be a pain.
Yes, Davidson is charming and has good schools and an exceptionally good array of cultural events given the size of the town. It is very walkable if you live right in the town, However, as has been noted the commute between Davidson and Charlotte during rush hour (even during non-rush hours) can be very trying - bumper to bumper. You had better be a fan of NPR or Books on Tape.
It's a hard call. If you are satisfied with staying in or close by the town, you will probably be happy there. But if you see Davidson as a suburb of Charlotte with easy access to the city you may be disappointed.
