I moved to Charlotte from Milwaukee in 2002, no job, single, didn't know anyone. Its had its ups and downs but I am glad I did it. That being said, the economy is horrible here right now, I just got laid off and wondering if I should stay or go. I own a condo in Dilworth...Dilworth is a great area, if you can find an affordable rental I would highly recommend it over University. I never go to the University area of town...I stick to Uptown, Southpark, Plaza Midwood, even Ballantyne has some nice places.
The other poster is right...you will miss the bar/pub scene, I do and I am not even a big drinker! There was definitely better nightlife in Milwaukee, but I was very lonely there and had few friends...here I have more friends than I know what to do with! Lots of social groups and transplants make it easier. Good thing you are coming with a boyfriend, the one possible deal breaker for me here is the high ratio of single females to single males and low single population in general. I had much better luck dating in WI.
Anyway, good luck, there are many positives about the area...I think you will like it for many reasons.
I agree with the poster who suggested Dilworth, Plaza Midwood, Uptown and I'd throw in SouthEnd and NoDa (looks a little rough around the edges, but I have 2 single friends who live in the area and love it). These areas are more walkable. IMO the University area is for college students and families and I think of Ballantyne as suburban family living.
