We love our wii! And 8 is a really good age for the system - my teen's not so interested in it, he prefers the xbox 360, but my younger son & I are!

Get a Wii + WiiFit.

My girls (7 & 9) and I spend hrs on it playing games against ea other.
Worth every penny.

Lately we have been doing a lot of WiiSki (required WiiFit board).

It is awesome and great for any age. My 4 year old uses ours and she loves it. No issues and we have had one for a year and a half.

Wii fit is $85 at Costco. You can also get one for cheap now at Dell.com with free shipping ($185 or so). Mario Kart is an awesome game if you like racing.
Since the sales tax was raised to 8.25%, I will be buying all my big purchases (over $200) out of state or online.

Wanted to add: if you get the Wii you should purchase at least one additional controller b/c it only comes with one. We find that 2 are ok for now, but in the near future we may be adding another pair. Also for some games, such as Mario Kart, it's worth it to buy a wheel (Mario Kart typically comes with a wheel when you buy it). You can buy an extra wheel fairly inexpensively. In Target or wherever else they sell Wii they will have accessories too. In my opinion the sports accessories such as tennis racket are not necessary but that is personal preference.

agreed on the extra controller. best way to do this (IMO) is to buy a game that comes with an extra controller. I believe WiiPlay is $40, $10 more than just a controller on its own. So, in essence, you're getting a GREAT game for $10!!

We too just got 1 (openint at Xmas).

Someone mentioned that there will be a very good deal at Walmart this Saturday morning.
The console will be the usual $199.99 but you also get a free $50 gift card.

The sale starts at 8 AM. Expect a line up in the electronics area.
If you are really crafty, head out to Locust where there is a new Walmart and it is wayyyy less busy ! Best chances of scoring there.

Also we tried out Wii Sport resort, a newer game that uses the Wii sense thinamajig. It makes the controller more sensitive. I fine addition ! I ordered an extra controller from China via Ebay (cost = $23 for controller and nunchuck). Haven't tested it out yet but if it works well, I'll report back.
