Can anyone tell me if there are areas in Charlotte where I can take photos of old houses and buildings? I like to paint rustic/abandoned places and just moved here a few days ago from PA.

Statesville is a bit of a drive (about an hour north on 77) but there are a lot of old buildings there.

I would also check out the Stonewall Jackson school. I believe it's in Concord. It's more on the creepy side if thats what you are looking for.

Plenty of abandoned places on both sides of Hwy 74 between the Wendover/Eastway bridge and Albemarle Rd.

Seriously though, the small nearby towns are a better bet: Newton, Cherryville, Rockwell, Gold Hill (old mining village), Richfield, New London, Ramseur, Siler City - lots of stuff on Hwy 49 heading toward Raleigh. Also some old buildings that would photograph (and paint I suppose) on US 73 between Hwy 85 and Lincolnton (@ US 321).

Have fun!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but we were out for a Sunday drive and came across "Stonewall Jackson School," and WOW those are some old, beat up buildings sitting right off old charlotte road. The Wiki page makes it sound like its still open, I assume it is under a new location? There is NO WAY those buildings can be safe for anyone to be in.

Stonewall Jackson was the old "reform school" for the area. These days, it is one of the places where they lock up juveniles who have been convicted of serious crime.

You might have noticed on the Wiki that it was one of the places in the state where they experimented with forced sterilization. The theory being that if you sterilize the undesirable part of the population, then eventually society won't have any undesirables. If I remember correctly, the program wasn't limited to just the sterilization of criminals, as was done at Stonewall Jackson.

The Winston paper did a great series on the forced sterilizations:

The Winston-Salem Journal: Against Their Will - North Carolina's Sterilization Program

Very interesting read. Thanks....It's amazing how far we think we are removed from programs like this, but it really was not that long ago.
