I totally agree! My kids are super excited to be getting a new year of mags such as Ranger Rick from my aunt. Much better than a toy that gets opened and then played with a few times.

Hit the sales too: stores are really getting on the sales this year.

YES to the magazine subscriptions! Especially for kids. I loved it when an uncle or aunt would get me a subscription to the Sporting News or National Geographic (or anything!) when I was a youngster. It's a gift you can enjoy all year round.

Hmmm, since teleporting isn't super-reliable yet, I'm happy to share the recipe instead, if you're interested.

You all have come up with great suggestions!

I am thinking . . . essential oils. Wonder what I could do with essential oils. I could make up some scents and a diffuser . . .

Peppermint Bark

Here's what I do:
First, crush a bunch of candy canes. It's easiest to food process them, but it is likely the loudest thing you'll ever do. Worth it to me.
Melt 1 bag semisweet chips over a double boiler. Once smooth, I put in a splash of vanilla. Spread over a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Put in fridge to cool.
Melt 1 bag white chocolate chips over a double boiler. Once smooth, add a splash of peppermint extract. Spread over the semisweet layer, then sprinkle the crushed candy canes on top. Stick back in the fridge until cool.
Break up into desired sized pieces. It doesn't take many to make a nice little bag for someone. I'm making two batches this year, I think. Some to sample, of course.
