Help, Need to know what areas around charlotte are good w/ schools and low crime (Huntersville: houses)

Hello,
i appreciate your help....My husband is being transferred around the charlotte area, not sure yet, so I guess any areas within a 30 mile radius od charlotte would be ok.....I have never been there and we are looking to fly down to start looking at houses, however I have no idea of where to start :
I have two small children in elem. school - good school district a must
Low crime area - would be great
Close knit communities - would be great......please help..need some ideas of where to start looking . We are coming from a small town in PA........where the schools system is great and hardly ever any violent crime.....

I will be coming down to the Charlotte area next week and would like know which towns in Union county I should check out. Is Davidson, Huntersvile, and Cornelius in this county? Thanks!

No Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson are in Mecklenberg county, we are by Lake Norman.
