I hear that alot from folks I know. I don't live in Charlotte but commute there from way up in Alexander county. I work in south Charlotte near S Tryon.

Anyways, today on my way in for the heck of it I went through Beatties Ford from the north and the neighbourhoods all looked nice. Some even seemed upscale.

Are there particular areas to avoid?

NW MEck is pretty nice, you get the NW corner of Charlotte, then head into Huntersville, Davidson, Cornelius up into Carabbus County. Mountain Island Lake and Lake Norman are up there as well. Beatties Ford is a main road through that area and though a little rough from Trade to Sunset it gets better as you go north. (except for those stupid houses they need to move.. UGH!). Northlake mall is a new retail area over there, with some crime like any mall area, but it's not any worse than other larger retail areas in my opinion. So not sure who you are hearing from but I would think it's actually one of the nicer areas, unless they are talking something specific.

Beatties Ford is a long road. Depending on what part of it you are on it can be really nice. I would avoid it near the intersection at Sunset Rd but once you go a little further North towards Huntersville it can be very nice. Personally I would probably rather live in NW CLT than south CLT. There is a lot less traffic plus you have Mtn Island Lake(if your into the outdoor life) and Latta Plantation nearby.

Wife and I love the outdoors. We often travel all over for hiking trails etc. It's funny we go almost to Asheville to hike but haven't been to the Troutman park.

Native I would agree with you on the traffic. Some days I have to visit our offices in Mint Hill and the travel back is horrendous. 485 is nice north bound, there's rarely any congestion.

And thank you for the response. I suppose I shouldn't just take people's word on things and actually see for myself

Northwest Mecklenburg is not bad at all! It's the northwest side of the city clostest to uptown that has a few issues, that's all.

I'd wager the BEST neighborhood (all things considered) in the Charlotte area is off Beatties Ford Road just before you get to Bradley middle school. That is at the extreme north end, well north of Sunset.

It is "behind" the Barkley Farm subdivision and is called Abbingdon Woods. About 40 homes on one acre plus lots, no through streets, backs to creek and swamp. Very, very nice, and very unknown.

besides it near my favorite parks where you can cookout hike, play volley ball, horseback ride, ride a segway, and of course ride your kayak. Also you can visit Carolina raptor center . go to Latta Plantation (http://www.lattaplantation.org/index.html - broken link) to watch a Civil War Reenactment, tour the plantation and many more events here some photos
