I grew up in southern NJ, but have been here for 10+ years now. What I miss about my part of NJ:
- unlimited access to trails and fire roads on public land (very little of that here)
- Specialty foods stores (bakeries, butchers, etc.)
- Wawa coffee and sandwiches
- being able to drive 30 minutes to the beach (not shore) or 1.5 hours to the mountains
- being able to hop a train into NYC for the day
- quaint historic towns like Lambertville, New Hope PA, etc. Davidson is close to that, but not quite there yet. I'm hopeful.
- Less complicated school system - you live in/move to a town that has good schools - that's it.
There are plenty of things that I don't miss, hence my reasons for living here for the last 10+ years. I understand no one place will have all that I want. I don't ever knock Charlotte for not having everything. I chose to live here.
I just moved here from Washington State and here's what I miss:
Drive thru Starbucks
the tons and tons of small coffee stands (coffee on every corner!)
"real" mountains... Mt. Rainer/Mt. St. Helens
the comfort of knowing where I am, how to get somewhere and how to get back!
What I DO NOT MISS?
rain, rain, rain.... all the time
so many days of grey clouds... with "sunbreaks"
taxes

The only thing that I still miss from my childhood in Michigan is Lake Michigan perch.
What I miss from Philly & South Jersey is the history. By that, I refer to the old buildings, small, quaint, towns that preserve old buildings, and the pride that many older communities take in the preservation. Also, all of the historical re-enactments (colonial & Revolutionary War).
All of the "mom & pop" restaurants.
Bookstores. They are few & far between, west of Charlotte.
Overall, I think it's more alike than dissimilar in all 3 places.
Location: Some got six month some got one solid. But me and my buddies all got lifetime here

For me home was New Jersey.. Things I miss:
I DO miss the self-service gas stations! (Thanks Sunny for the spinoff post idea!)
24 hour Diners
Dunkin Donuts at every 1 mile interval.
NYC Skyline
Getting "down the shore" in less than 30 minutes!
Broadway shows in Times Square
NJ Transit, PATH train
PIZZA!!! And I mean PIZZA!!!
Snow that hangs around for awhile
Atlantic City casinos!!
I'm gonna add Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium specifically to that list. Also toss in an hour and change drive to Philly for the odd game at the Wachovia Center.
I like how you mention the Dunkin Donuts every mile. From exit 123 on the GSP over to route 34 in Old Bridge there were FOUR Dunkin Donuts within that span, three of them inside of two miles (two were actually walking distance on route 9). Two of them were of the DD/Baskin Robbins variety. They were EVERYWHERE. The closest one to me is the Great Wolf one. A little pricey, but that's okay. I'm nuts over their coffee.

I miss pizza (Chicago style), hot dogs and Italian beef
I miss Cubs baseball & summer days at the beach (Lake Michigan)
I miss museums that you get lost in and not feeling like some kind of a freak because I am alone
I miss White Castle, the CTA and being able to live without a car.
I DO NOT miss snow, sleet, ice and frigid days/nights. I DO NOT miss the crime and corruption (although that is getting to be a close second here!)
Born in Chicago and you said it all except I would add the Bears, the Hawks and the Bulls. I do miss some of the winter. But just some. I prefer the winters here.
Also lived 35 years in Ft. Lauderdale and miss the beach.
The restaurants that were on the water and you could eat outside and enjoy the view.
Local restaurants we went to all the time.
And the Chicago-style hot dog place just down the street!
My kids.
The Church I attended.
Old friends.
Don't miss the heat, the humidity, the crowds, the traffic and the heat.
Life is an adventure and we are having a ball exploring our new home state. And the one thing about all the "I misses" is that when we travel to Chicago and Ft. Lauderdale now to see our family we can still enjoy most of those things and then we get to come back home!

You're right, there! I have developed a "list" of must-do things when I go to Chicago...and, the trip is not complete until I have finished them all!

When my kids were growing up in Florida, my ex and I went up every summer to see my sister. I made sure the kids went to all the museums, Cub games, the Sears () Tower and all there was to see. They love Chicago as much as I do. I now have to get my husband up there for more than a short weekend to show him everything. I can't wait! So my list is long and it's going to be tough because my "to do" list for North Carolina is longer!
I have to check out Delancey St., they have it on the menu.
