This is a photo of Charlotte taken from the top of Grandfather Mountain which is about 100 or so miles from here as the crow flies. This mountain is one of the highest on the East coast of North America. (NC's Mt. Mitchell is the tallest)

This picture is on page 22 on Hugh Morton's North Carolina.
The caption beneath reads

This was made from a spot near the Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain. According to FAA air maps, Charlotte is 87 miles from Grandfather. I (Hugh) took the picture in mid-December when a cold front had just cleared the air. It would be exciting to have air quality like this every day, but unfortunately this sort of visibility is rare.

You really should, it's a great area and very special with all its biodiversity. If you like to hike at all it has a lot of neat trails too.
