Hopefully, by the middle of next year, work crews should put up the first signs proclaiming “Lake Norman Bicycle Route,” a 94-mile lariat that will snake through four counties and five municipalities and encircle 520 miles of shoreline.
I support this, but I do have to agree with the dangers of riding a bike over the Cowan's Ford bridge or anywhere for that matter on that portion of Hwy 73. It would be interesting if they could instead figure out how to allow bike riding over the dam instead, but I guess they would cite security concerns against that. Maybe an alternative would be some sort of weir between the bridge and the dam as the water there isn't that deep.
Years ago I used to routinely bike from Huntersville to Latta Plantation Park, but there is simply too much traffic now for me to want to do that.
I am all for more designated bike trails but I wish they would build one from Matthews into the city. Some guy rides up Idlewild every day and holds up traffic. I agree they have a right to the road but it doesn't mean I can't be annoyed when I have to slow down.
