People whine about the smoke inside and now they whine about the smoke outside. Is someone going to suggest I go have my smoke on the moon? Or how about we just ban smoking everywhere, including in the comfort of our own homes? I'm sure that'll be a big hit in Raleigh. Hell, they're probably already working on it.

Be happy you don't have to breathe in our toxic clouds of poison. It was, after all, for the kids. Bah humbug.

The owners I have talked to haven't seen a change. Some of the sports bars said it increased their weekend business but weekday business has dropped a bit. Note that private club is a bit distorted here and not many places are considered as such. So just because a place in Epicenter says its a private club, they aren't and still have to be done smoking. Also there are rules for outside smoking as well. Most places are still working on this a bit, I know a few places that basically set up a little smoking area outside away from the doors. I wish more would do this. I get annoyed walking in through the smokers.

As far as gov't intrusion. Eh.. I still don't know... one thing is that smoking effects others in the immediate area, unlike eating fatty foods. KInd of like loud cell phone talkers!!!!!! So I think this opened up to new people, but in reality, this new peak may die down. Not sure, let's ask the question a year from now.

If I walked around with aerosol "fart in a can" spraying it on everyone in my vicinity, I'd likely be assaulted and/or arrested. I don't see why walking around fuming the indelible stench of burning tobacco is any different. And since this is obviously an unpopular/unrealistic view of those who smoke, that's why big brother has to step in and make things fair for all. Yes, I'm hinting that smoking around those who don't is inconsiderate...and why should we have to just go somewhere else?

Gotta tell you dude, not much valuable information was taken from your posting. It wasn't the "stench" that was the main concern. It was the deadly effects of the smoke on those that have medical problems, the elderly, and children. Other than that statement, your posting was just fine. Yes, it should be banned in any place where the general public is likely to breath. Have a nice clean air day. Come on Steve, it is only a cigarette.

Agreed. And I am a smoker.

Um...because the rules of the "house" should be up to the owners, not you, me or anyone else.

Same to ya...especially if you think the occasional puff of smoke in your face is cutting days off of your life. It's a public nuisance, just like skateboarding in places where people are trying to walk, just like loud and excessive use of profanity (which in many places is illegal), just like hauking a snotty lougie onto the ground where people are walking (again illegal in most parts--albeit one of those oddball laws still on the books, but nonetheless disgusting).

And Tober, I'm oddly in slight agreement with you on the notion that private property is private property...and activities on such property should be governed by the owners, within the extent of the law. Where I get tipped to the other side of the fence though is like I said earlier in this post: when smokers ruin a place for me to enjoy. I think we'd all agree that everyone has the same "right" to enjoy a place...so why is it cool that someone can infringe upon someone else's enjoyment? When someone is loud and obnoxious, they're typically asked to curb it or leave. Same if they break into a fight. So since smokers would never willfully stop smoking in places non-smokers would also like to frequent, that's when there needs to be a law to stop it. Just like speed limits...just like homicide laws...just like anything else where we humans can't play nice without big brother telling us "better not do that."

Sounds like prohibition to me. That went well, didn't it.

Is that a serious question?

Did you see the post that I responded to? Think about it. Apparently it's someone who knows nothing about prohibition, the concept, or what the results of that stupid law were. I do. I grew up hearing about it & went to school when they still taught history.

Oh, & while I'm at it, both of my grandfathers brewed their own beer & one ran a still (legally, by the skin of his teeth.) Oh & note that I posted a laughing smilie.
