The report, which focused on job creation in 2009, showed that 1,029 new and expanding firms generated 15,542 jobs. That job count is up 28 percent from the year before, and the highest level since 2003.

I love positives as much as the next but read the story very carefully. The next paragraph says, Yet the recession's effects continue to squeeze the area. Overall, the number of people with jobs in Mecklenburg County has fallen by almost 29,000 since the recession began, about 6 percent of the total work force, government data show.

There were about 560 fewer companies in Mecklenburg last year than in 2008, according to figures from the N.C. Employment Security Commission.

And continuing a trend from the chamber's recent quarterly reports, local firms' monetary investment and square footage were down sharply in 2009. Local firms invested $1.5 billion, down 35 percent from the year before, and moved into 11 million square feet of space, down almost 60 percent from 2008, the report found.

It is important to note that a "company" is any organization that files as a company for tax purposes. A company can consist of one person. In this area, most of the companies that went under are very small businesses that had the odds against them for survival anyway regardless of recession. There is lots of competiton out there. Fortunately, it seems as if for every restaurant that closes down, two more open.
