I'm sure if you canceled contract, it wouldn't make a difference... just tell them you are canceling. Don't say you want to use it without being monitored. Just tell them you aren't going to pay and don't let them in your house to disconnect, etc.
You have to sign the cancellation for them to shut it off. Do I have to let them in to do it? No. Like I said earlier, they told me they don't even need to come in and I own my system. Trouble is, I still want it to work locally after they shut it off! I may need some help on how to configure that.

I have been monitored since I moved in and CMPD arrived faster then 15 minutes and frankly I feel safe with it but then some say to play a recording of barking dogs and which is a deterent but what if someone is scoping out your residence? It is that peace of mind thing and different strokes for different strokes, but then my present company just raised the monthly 25%, after buying out the original company, but it's still cheaper then CPI, and besides their TV ads suck.

I know a couple with an unmonitored system and the Alarm still goes off if the door or window is opened when it is on set on Instant or away. They can still use all functions of the system- door chime, message, etc. The only difference is if the Alarm goes off, you have to call the police yourself. I don't think it matters who use to monitor the system, just what type of system you have. I think most companies use the Honeywell control panels.

Disconnect the phone live, and then set off the alarm.

The last house I lived in had an alarm system and they wanted $60/month to monitor with cellular service since I didn't have a phone line. They wouldn't tell me or didn't know the unlock code. So I sat there tried the codes sequentially until I found it. It took a few weeks of work but I got an unmonitored alarm system for my trouble.
