So we've lived here over a year now and we're still fascinated by the whole bread/milk/run on the grocery store phenomenon. My wife even joined in on the fun last night (Thursday) and actually bought both bread and milk just to say she had participated in the event (we had to go shopping regardless). It's almost like it's contagious.
I mean, it snows in other places of the country and there is no mass run on the grocery store. You'd think we were preparing for a bird flu outbreak or something...months of survival supplies.. etc. Do people really not have enough food to survive 1-2 days? I imagine most people could stand to lose the weight anyhow
Is this a Charlotte phenomenon or does it exist in other areas too?
Yes they do. You just don't see them or witness them lol. I am a Bostonian and you better believe those shelves get emptied when there is a real threat of a Blizzard or heavy snowfall.
That's the way it was when we lived in Maryland, just west of Baltimore. The grocery stores were wwwwaaaayyy more crowded a day or two before a storm than I found them to be here yesterday and today.
Yup...I lived there too and it was almost as bad as here with people stocking up for the end of days.
Didn't go the grocery store today...but did make a run to Frugals to restock the bar. So we're good.
Oh, back to the question you asked. Even in Minneapolis they flock to the stores just to be prepared. Not like here, no, but they do hit the stores if a MAJOR event has been forecast.
Lund's & Byerly's I betcha! I've been to M/SP a few times for a convention, loved going to those stores for "room supplies".

U betcha! LOL Although, I was more likely to say "y'all going to Lund's?" They'd look at me like I had 3 eyes! LOL My accent didn't quite fit in up in the Great White North! I'd get, "you're not from round here are ya" ALL the time! It's gorgeous up there....love the Mall of America sooooooooooo much...but it's not the south. I think I said this somewhere else once...they don't serve sweet tea there...and you can't buy grits, but if you get lucky you might find some instant.

If you need a fix of sweet tea and southern cooking go to Cracker Barrel.

That's actually funny because we moved up there for Cracker Barrel. My ex hubby is a General Manager for them. We were young and looking for adventure and wanted to get a long way from Atlanta just to try something different. We were crying to come South in about 8 months! Took us 13 to move and we wound up in Charlotte by way of Wilson (we spent 7 months in THAT hellhole town LOL).....I did go to CB sometimes because it was the closest thing to home that there was up there. Saying that shows just how big a mistake we made! LOL Oh well, live and learn!
Now part II of this begins. The people getting stuck because they bought a SUV and want to show it off and get into trouble along with the ones from the snow belt who want to prove they can drive in this Southern snow. It will be like the roller derby except with cars. Good day to cancel all plans, watch TV, play video games, cook, etc. and stay home.
Timing does kinda stink as I had some free tickets to the Home Show this weekend.

Yeah, I'm bummed too! There was a vendor scheduled to sell lotsa shoes at our Clubhouse today...was all planned since the beginning of the month. I don't think it's on though... and I wanted those shoes....
I was just at Trader Joes on the way from preschool b/c yesterday I ran out of time to get the sliced chicken I love there. It was a madhouse! You guys weren't kidding about the grocery run. Did not notice the milk supply b/c i did not need any. Waited in long lines to check out. The day has an urgency feel to it, similar to pre-hurricane conditions in Miami.
My daughter works there, and they did more business than on their busiest day during the holidays!!
Oh, and by the time she left last night, only about a dozen gallons of fat free and some quarts of whole milk were left
