If you ride a bike, please don't try to cross the expressway! I see people walking across 74 all the time and I am always amazed more people don't get hit.

I ride a one on occasion and it can be scary even on streets with bike lanes. Of course where you live has an impact on where you ride however it may be worth it to find a bike route somewhere online on streets with bike lanes. Load your bike up, find a parking lot and unload and ride. = safer. Very unfortunate.

This is really sad!

I am interested in supporting a more cycling friendly Charlotte. Do you know of the right groups or people to contact?

Later,

-Chris-

Wow Independence is like getting on a freeway. I cant imagine biking anywhere the speed limit is above 35.
If they was commuting all the city buses have bike racks if they where doing it for exercise they should have chosen roads like Monroe Road which isnt much better due to the
high traffic
Im sorry for the family's loss
Charlotte isnt a bike friendly city.

If this was near Briar Creek then he should not have been on Independence as they don't allow pedestrians on that portion of the road. They have already had add more height to the barriers to keep people from trying it.

I hope not. From what I read the driver was not at fault.

I also feel bad for the family and agree that Charlotte isn't a bike friendly city. But...

1. Independence at Briar Creek IS a freeway
2. He wasn't just trying to ride along the freeway, he was trying to cross. There is a reason those giant barriers are there.

I used to cross Independence on Village Lake drive to get to the McAlpine Creek Greenway. It's very scary in spite of the light. Wish they had pedestrian walkways here
