Ok so I am an occupant on a lease, NOT the leaseholder, just listed as an occupant...I want to leave before my lease is up, will I get in any legal trouble if I leave before the lease is up?? I've heard that there is nothing legally my roommate can do, but I just wanted to be certain before I made up my mind. Thanks!

I am not a lawyer, and I don't play one on tv ( - old tv commercial joke), but you are correct...you can leave. Only the leaseholder is responsible, not the occupants, for the lease. Best of luck!

You can be responsible to your room mate in small claims court if he so chooses to pursue. You had a verbal contract with your room mate. And I assume, he can prove you were both living there and helped pay the bills. Best thing to do is to help your room mate find a replacement and or leave on good terms.

Otherwise, there is a chance you can be sued, and a chance he could win.

I think this part right here is the key. My suggestion would be to seek legitimate legal advice if you think it likely that you'll leave on less-than-friendly terms prior to the lease expiration.

Best idea: get a copy of the lease and see if you have any contractoral obligations.
