My husband just got a job in Charlotte in the area of the I85 and I485 junction. I have a couple of questions. First, are there any really nice suburbs that have good schools in this area (within 15 min's) along with fantastic shopping? Second, I've been reading a lot of positive things about South Charlotte. How long of a commute is it from the Southpark area to the I85/I485 junction?
I would appreciate your wisdom/experience/opinions!!

Congratulations on your husbands new job! How do you define fantastic shopping? What is your price range? Ideal neighborhood? Ideal house? From Southpark he would have a reverse commute, down 77 to 485. My guess is maybe about 20 -25 mins? The suburbs of Belmont and Mt. Holly in Gaston county are close by I-85 exits 26 & 27 (485 is exit 30). I think Belmont schools have better ratings. For more shopping options you need to go to exits 23 -20 in Gastonia. In Charlotte there is the Northlake (NW Charlotte) and Steele Creek (SW Charlotte) nearby. They have the same almost the same shopping options as Gastonia. Northlake Mall has more stores than the mall in Gastonia. There isnt a mall in Steele Creek. Steele Creek schools are not well regarded but I know Olympic HS grads that did/are doing well in college and hwve meaningful employment. Not sure about Northlake area schools. 485/77 makes it easy to get to Southpark and South Charlotte from any of those areas. You are not cut off from them if you live elsewhere.

Which junction of I85/485 do you mean? They meet up where the previous poster mentioned, on the WSW side of the city, and they also intersect up closer to the University area NE of the city. SouthPark would be doable if you mean the WSW junction, but I couldn't recommend it at all if you'll be driving to the NE junction.

I guess I wasn't specific about which intersect I was talking about. I mean near the University area. The NE side of I485. He doesn't want to commute more than 30 min's (one way). We have one child in elementary and one in middle school so school district is top priority. We like living in a community but don't like the houses stacked on top of one another. Any good prospects in the concord area?

Your husband will have a dreadful commute if working at I85 and I485 and living in South Charlotte area.

Concord or Harrisburg would be good picks

Kings Crossing, Afton Village, Pine Creek, Kellswater, Christenbury Hall, Skybrook
to name a few. Public Schools are better and safer in Concord than Mecklenburg (Charlotte).

Whoops, I assumed you meant the southern connection. Sorry!

Well, you are very near Concord Mills, not far from the University area, not too far from Birkdale village or Northlake mall for shopping. There are several nice neighborhoods nearby in both Mecklenburg and Cabarrus. ( Harrisburg is nice). As far as schools, the schools there are better than advertised, but I would stay away from the North Tryon area - Mallard Creek or on the other side, Clear Creek are good choices.
