Has anyone been to Penguin's Drive-In located in Charlotte? I heard some people talking about this place and fried pickles and other famous items on the menu. They saw it on a HGTV show talking about famous drive-in restaurants. What's the story?

It was on the Food network. landmark since 1954. They closed for a little bit in the late 90s and someone bought it and resurrected. The best fried pickles bar none (and I am a transplant). They also have good burgers and cheap beer like pabst as well as soy dogs and veggie burgers. The place is small so it gets crowded and there is often a line to get in, especially during lunch and on the weekends. It can also be smoky in there, which I am sensitive to but I dont care because the Penguin is that good. Afterwards you can go across the stree to Thomas Street Tavern which is bigger and has a front and rear patio (dog-friendly too). www.myspace.com/penguindrivein

Yeah, they wanted to open a bar but couldnt w/out being a private club (antiqauted NC law) so they brought in someone to do the food. Great to support local buiness and that is a cool area.

If you do want an actual drive-in with great food, South 21 is the best! I grew up in Charlotte, as did my parents, and we'll take South 21 any day over the Penguin. They have two locations, one on Independence (not too far from where the Penguin is actually) and one on South Blvd.

Penguin is great. Try Lupe's or one or two other dives.
Places like this abound in Winston-Salem, but unlike Charlotte W-S doesn't tear them down, hence the demand for them here in town. After your burgers and pickles at the Penguin, go over to Thos. St and get rowdy man!!! Lester |

It is really good. The fried pickles are good and their Tuna Melt is awesome.
