I'll bet he has never been employed. Ever.
Unfortunately, that photo could be of anybody that height. Can't tell a thing about who it really might be.
I wanna know how the car owner got into a situation he couldn't drive away from. Someone aims a shot gun at me and my foot is gonna be on the gas pedal, even if that means in reverse. Anyone have info on how that carjacking even occurred? There wasn't enough info in the article to explain how that happened - as in - stopped at a light? That is very worrisome to think a person couldn't get out of the way fast enough to escape while in the driver's seat.

I always have wondered that myself. Personally I always make sure my doors are locked. I guess if I was stuck in traffic they'd be able to break my window to get me out before I could drive away. But in that case I guess they aren't going to make a fast get away.

When you are stopped at a light, always be looking in your mirrors and out of your windows of what is happening around you. It is all part of being street smart and protecting yourself.
It often amazes me how some people just zone-out when they are stopped for a light or traffic.
And keep your doors locked and windows up!
If all else fails, a .45 will bring almost anything down.

I don't understand how the police don't have the license plate number. They have the owner of the car, right?

I guess the owner didn't remember his license plate number and didn't have any paperwork that had the tag # on it. I wondered about that, too. Seemed weird that they would not have made a call to SC DMV and gotten the license plate #.

What if someone's behind you and in front of you? What if the traffic on the cross-street is whizzing by and there's someone behind you? You hit reverse you just give the guy your windshield as a target and you eventually have to put it in drive again; plus a lot of cars shut down if you go too fast in reverse. It takes a fraction of a second to pull a trigger and a fraction of a second to hit your gas pedal. Just because you hit the gas, doesn't mean he's not going to shoot. If the guy had a shotgun with range, you'd be doubly endangering yourself.
It's easy to Monday morning quarterback on such a situation, but think about how many times you're stopped at a light surrounded on three or four sides. What good would it do to potentially get hurt or hurt others by causing an accident, **** off the shooter and then be a sitting duck for him? Furthermore, unless you're driving with a gun in your hand, he clearly has the advantage. By the time you reach for your weapon, he's popped at least one in you. These are the situations carjackers prey on because they know it will be easy pickings.
If G*d forbid this ever happens to you I hope you are lucky enough to be in a situation that would allow you to speed away safely without endangering others. And I hope you have the presence of mind not to freeze if a shotgun is ever pointed at you. But until you've been in such a situation, it is hard to imagine.

Actually, I have been in a very similar situation and have written about it here on City Data in the past.
I was not trying to disparage the driver of the car or the decisions that were made to keep from getting shot by a gunman - just trying to figure out the circumstances that led up to the car jacking.
There are all sorts of scenarios one can conjure up; my point is - what WERE the actual circumstances - so that others of us can hope to avoid them in the future.
