When all is said and done I think K should write a book, seriously. What he and his wife have been thru is so tragic, but also important to document.
Well, I'm at least trying to accurately blog about this experience, hopefully so others can learn from my experiences. I know it's an epidemic nationwide problem that seems to have no thought from our (supposed) leaders on what to do about it.
Anyway, I was reading a movie review the other day about a documentary that someone made that's received a lot of buzz from the independent movie communities. It's a true story about a couple, when, about three years into their marriage, she suffered a debilitating aneurysm and became completely disabled. Since they ran a farm and were not near any major city, they had absolutely zero help or support available. As it ended up, as distasteful as it was to both of them, they started a brothel, which now provides them with the income they need to keep going.
Oh, and what a frustrating day yesterday was. I've been harping on her for a long time now to open her own checking account and to have her Social Security check routed to it instead of to mine. I finally insisted that we take care of this, so I started yesterday, early in the morning, to go to the bank and open an account. Of course, the bank requires an ID, and, unknown to me, she has let her NC picture ID expire. So, knowing that you need two forms of ID for a replacement picture ID card, I started looking for her original Social Security card. Come to find out, she doesn't have one. So, I bring her to the Social Security office for a replacement id card. They also require two forms of ID, one of which must be a valid picture ID. A birth certificate is not valid. Her Medicare insurance card is not valid. A physician will have to be contacted, and will have to write a letter that attests to her being the patient under his care, possessing that same SSN and DOB.

"Gloom, despair, and agony on me. Deep dark depression, excessive misery. If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. Gloom, despair, and agony on me."

WHOWWWLLLL!! (no idea how to spell that sound out)
I like how they waited until they KNEW I was unemployed before dropping this bomb on me. As if I have the funds to hire an attorney, which I do have to do. This is not a trivial amount of money, and they can't keep suing me every year as it grows larger and larger.
I think my next step is to force DHHS to place her under some sort of protective custody. I do believe that her life is now at risk. I think that the judge's ruling allowing her discharge, even though it's clearly illegal, is a clear green light signal for them to do just about anything and get away with it (after all, this is NC, where no one ever gets convicted for breaking the law).
I hope they are prepared for a battle. I will not back down. I will not have the state force me to accept someone into my home against my will, and I will defend my civil rights with lethal force if necessary.
