It troubles me that every year Christmas seems to be epitomized by extremely rude behavior & general nastiness culminating in an orgy of retail gluttony. Yes... I went to Carolina Place last night to get a gift certificate for my wife. What a madhouse & the heat must've been set to 80*.
I hear ya'! I'm not of fan of shopping in malls, too many rude a$$holes out there! I did most of my shopping online this year. What a difference. No lines, no nasty shoppers & I didn't have to lug all the packages home. Quick delivery right to my doorstep!
I have to go out tomorrow for some last minute things & food shopping. Picking up my Honey Baked Ham in Cornelius. Hope the lines aren't too long & the stores aren't too crowded.
INDEED, Barking. That, actually, is my heritage. We didn't put up a tree or any decorations until Christmas Eve; then, all the cousins came over to my grandmother's and we had a party...decorating the tree and singing...but, then, the decorations stayed up until January 8th. (we kept them up 2 days longer because it was my other grandmother's birthday on Jan. 8th)
Same here. I remember getting our tree the 3rd week of Dec. & putting it up on the 23rd. We didn't decorate it until the next day & it always stayed up until the Epiphany. I'm amazed as to how many trees I see out by the curb down here on the 26th!
They don't seem to recognize it down here for some reason....
Most evangelical denominations (like Baptists) don't follow a liturgical calendar. They don't recognize Lent either, which I thought was really weird when I first moved to the South. I don't think I knew a single person growing up who didn't recognize Lent. Anyway, I think it's because they feel they can be more inspired by God rather than dictated by a calendar when it comes to celebrations and recognitions.
Don't forget I've lived in MA, CT, and NY before here - still never heard of it. Is it a denominational, or more of a cultural, celebration?
Well, it may be denominational...Lutheran.... as well as cultural. Many European natives celebrate Christmas this way. I grew up in a Norwegian household so that is why we did (Evangelical Lutheran)...it is a part of our whole celebration. My cousins sometimes don't send out their Christmas cards until after Dec 25th...as it is still considered Christmas until Jan 6th.
However, I think that some Italian households did the same...

Italian here & yes we did celebrate the Epiphany/"Little Christmas"/the Feast Day of the 2 Kings in our home.
I was raised Episcopalian. I feel like its time to move towards traditions that have a connection to the past rather than those that celebrate retail gluttony. And... I was at Southpark Mall this morning. Another huge mistake on my part. But at least this time I was in & out in record time. Does anyone know why Dick's took out their climbing wall?
