I live in a development where the houses are pretty close together. My neighbors on both sides of me smoke on their decks and front porches which makes it almost impossible for me to walk outside without smelling smoke. I also can't open my windows or my sliding glass door also without the smell of smoke penetrating into my house.

Does anyone else have this problem and what did you do about it?

I don't know if there is anything you can do about it. They're not breaking any laws or ordinances that I'm aware of. Asking them politely to not smoke on their property probably won't get you anywhere. Even suggesting that they are creating a nuisance on your property due to actions on their property is a looooong stretch.

I feel for you. I'd hate to have to tolerate that in my own home.

What about getting two box fans face them towards your neighbor
then when it gets hot you could turn it toward you to cool you off
and shoo away flies & mosquitoes

I like that idea Sunny!! The box fans would be easy to move around. I'm sure there's some made that could be used safely outdoors.

I feel for you Jake. I only have one neighbor next to us that smokes. Love them dearly, but I can't send alot of time inside their home as it messes up my sinus', etc... We don't allow smoking in our home either. So far, it hasn't been a problem with guests.

Ugh. That would be my worst nightmare. I'm so sorry you have to deal w/that. The fans are what I would suggest as well.

The fans are an immediate result. However, long term, could you plant hedge or bush(es) that would block the odor from coming into your house? As I am sitting in my upstairs office and the wind is gently blowing the trees outside my window, I am thinking that if there was a natural "block" the smells would be greatly reduced and/or eliminated.

and, they do have outdoor fans that are on pedestals. you could just turn them towards the neighbours houses and blow the smoke back to them.

Move?? I really don't know what you can really do. That stinks, though (pun intended).
