I am looking at Harrisburg as one of my relocation options - good schools, proximity to potential workplace being top reasons. Can folks on the forum air their thoughts on Harrisburg in general, and also specific suggestions on communities to look at for buying a house (though will prefer to rent initially for about 6 months). My budget is anywhere between 350K ~ 450K for buying, and 800~1200 for renting. Have a preference for more densely populated, safer, diverse communities (DW is a stay-at-home-mom).
So lets hear it folks! Your opnions/advise counts...
I live in Concord (which butts up to Harrisburg). Harrisburg is a very nice town and is very convenient to shopping/restaurants in Concord and Charlotte. VERY safe, great schools, and you'll have no problem finding a nice home in your range (specific neighborhoods I'm not familiar with). Lots of families. Reedy Creek Park/Nature Preserve (about 800 acres) is nearby in NE Charlotte. We visit there about once a week and love it. Miles of trails, VERY heavily wooded, nature center, dog park, basketball, ball fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, open spaces. We love it!!!
Harrisburg is a good place to live. We also did extensive research of areas in North Charlotte as it would be close to work. Harrisburg is the next upcoming area which has a country feel to it. The schools (another important factor for us) are good. Housing wise there are lot of new developments in the area. Check developements off of Stallings, Rocky River Road which are very close to I-485 and in your price range. Also there is 24 hour CVS on 49 near 485.
We moved to Harrisburg a little over a year ago and couldn't be happier. Our realtor, who we loved, advised us not to move here as it's not as trendy as other areas which are talked about ad nauseum. But we loved the house we found and the area is exactly what we were looking for. Really the only area that is more then 30-40 minutes away is South Charlotte and even at the right time of day it's not a long trek. It's quiet, the people are friendly (an example of this: every year at the holiday season the people on our cul-de-sac come around with little trinkets and to say hello) and it still has that country feel. Funny enough, Harrisburg seems to be getting more and more attention, I feel in 5 to 10 years it will be much more developed (hopefully well done) and housing prices will inevitably quickly rise. I agree with NEWNC_Resident, that's a great area to check out. Good luck!
