warehouse or grocery employment
I work for Rooms To Go furniture company and I transferred employment to Charlotte a month ago. There were some unpleasant suprises and some loss of income that I wasn't told about before coming here, with no hope in sight of fixing these issues. Does anyone know of any good employers in the Charlotte area in warehouse work/distribution?? I was used to making 26K in FL so anything $13/hour will be equivalent to what I WAS making before arriving in NC. If its not at least 12, or 13 bucks an hour its just not an option.
I'm 23 with experience in only grocery/retail, and in warehouse/distribution.
I'm contemplating testing for a Postal Service position, as I have studied the materials over a year ago and they pay $18/hour here but I know that can take a long time to finally get in so thats not the best short term goal.
I'm still shaking mad from an HR meeting today where they politely told me I could suck it up or get another job if I don't like the way they do things!

Probably one of the largest distribution/WH facilities would be Food Lion, headquarted in Salisbury, NC (about 30 miles north of Charlotte, exit 74/75 off of I-85) http://foodlion.com/Employment/ They have huge warehouses next to the corporate office and also farther down the road, shipping to over 1200 stores that are broken up between several distribution areas.

Well, if they do anything illegal or against employment code, then leaving could net you a big lawsuit. But file that before you quit. However, I doubt this is the case. The reality is that we are mostly employed 'at will' and can quit or be fired at any time.
Sucks, however, working for someone that seemingly doesn't appreciate their employee contributions, but some companies are like that. Hello new millenium! Just remember, that your work is not your life -- it's a means to an end. It's better if you enjoy your work, but if you don't care for your employers, I know, it's tough. Also remember, that you are not there to make friends or reveal your personal side. It's business. Keep it as such.
As for places to work, is there a Costco nearby? I heard this is a great company to work with fair wages, benefits and promotional opportunities. As a matter of fact, watch ABC's 20/20 Friday night (8/4/06). I think they are featuring the owner of Costco on their program.
Good luck!

I'm trying to keep such thoughts in place as I read that, by 2010, 30% of technology jobs will be overseas. Yeehaw. So much for 25 years of experience and dedication to the IT field.

Well, in ten years, just be prepared since it could be worse than that. However, just like a building contractor, it's better to be leading a group of builders to complete a project than actually building the project with your hands. More lucrative that way. Just figure out a way to capitalize on the foreign market and workforce.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the USA. But it's amazing to me that we are ignoring the global influence and the cost of producing things in the U.S. Things have got to change, but in the meantime, you must be thinking about how to capitalize on the present situation. With technology, it's fairly simple to manage a balance between U.S. and foreign markets.
I hope it doesn't get that bad, but it probably will since the cost of living in this free country is getting more and more expensive as each year passes. I'm sure the people of NC aren't gonna like this, but it's amazing how tough everything got over the last eight years. And not one of my letters from the big cheese on Capitol Hill has been answered. But I digress.

Well, 10 years down the road, we hope to bail on the entire mess. RETIREMENT!!! Even though investment wigs say it isn't a smart thing to do; we should be investing the $$ rather than paying off a source of a tax deduction; we are paying off our house ASAP. No car payments, small credit balances, and we are socking as much as possible into our 401ks. Spouse will be eligible for SS, though we aren't counting on that as a source of income. I just feel sorry for the youngsters coming up through the work ranks.

"Production" is one thing. Anyone with a history of living in NC has seen the textile; even tobacco producers; bleed away. We're talking about devaluing American brains. Talk about causing people to lose confidence I've seen programmers with decades of experience and ingenuity in solving problems lose their jobs to Indian contractors with 4 months training at some factory-style college in Bangalore who'll work for 1/5 the pay.

Oh, so you're one of Them Please keep writing, if only to disprove Karl Rove's notion that voters are inattentive (even if he also says we're not "stupid". Which I don't think he believes for one second )

I would say that Food Lion would be your best bet, they have a dry grocery and a perishable (frozen) warehouse in Salisbury. I worked at the pershiable, they start you out at $9/hr, but when you make production, you get bumped up to $14.83 (maybe higher by now). Their production is on a sliding scale, the more you do, the more you make, I made as much as $21/hr. some weeks, but usually stayed around $17-$18/hr.
