Hello,
I am moving to Charlotte next month and need info on the high schools. I am also looking for a good neighborhood. I am looking in the north east section as I will be working in Concord. I have heard so many stories about "lotteries" and overcrowding in the schools.
I was born in NY and have been in NC for 10 years now so I am also interested in where the transplants are Since I have been in NC so far I have been in North Raleigh so that is I guess what I am looking for as far as neighborhoods.
I know this is asked all the time, I want the good and the bad, I can read between the lines.
Thanks for all who reply

Since you will be working in Concord why not live there too? Cabarrus County School System is a lot smaller than Charlotte Mecklenburg and has some good schools. We are overrun with transplants - you'll find them everywhere, so there is no need to go to one particular area You don't mention your price range for a home, but if you look to live west of I85, just north of Concord Mills mall, you'll find lots of nice newer neighborhoods with new schools.
Thank you so much for your reply lovesmountains! I checked out Concord but it reminded me too much of Raleigh, I am also looking for a change. (I miss the city) This will be an adjustment for my son, as he has been in the "country" 1/2 of his life.
My price range is no more than 850.00 per month, would like to find a rental house but apartments are great too.

You probably only saw the older side of Concord. Look at the section I mentioned, it abuts the Charlotte city limits and is close to everything a kid needs (the mall!). You could probably find a rental in Moss Creek, though your price range will make being in the newer side of things more difficult. Especially in Charlotte itself, most homes in desirable areas (read, "good schools") are going to be at least $1000 a month.
Wonderful! I will look at Concord again, we did see it after 4 hours of driving Charlotte lol. What are the good schools in Charlotte? I need a baseline to compare to Concord. Oh, and I was quite fond of the mall as well!

The top high schools academically as a whole in Charlotte are:
loves is a very wise woman... I would strongly suggest that you follow her line in thinking of basing your school decision on what High School the area feeds into. Granted, schools run at the county level could redraw lines at any time. Do the research and the make the best decision possible for your kids.
One of your biggest challenges will be that the very transplants you're looking for have driven the values up in the "better schools"... It's a catch22.
I agree! I dont care if I have to drive 40mi to work lol I want him to have a good school relationship. I can always go to Charlotte to get my "city fix" I actually consider myself from here now I just didnt want another Wake County Schools fiasco like I had here when I get there.

"You must spread some reputation around before giving it to MikeyKid again" Hey, I tried - thanks for the compliment.
