I was in Beijing, China. In a hotel lobby. We were getting ready to head to the airport to come home and our guide burst in with the news. Nobody could believe it. However, in the CHINESE airport (and later in the Tokyo airport) CNN (in those languages) was non-stop on the subject. How do I know? The photos and the English by-lines.
Well, despite what you might think about him personally, he was a great musician and a talented artist. I grew up with the Jackson 5 (yes, I am dating myself) and had all of their albums. Kind of fell away from being a fan over the years, mainly due to his ..er... eccentricities but, I always respected his talent. Last year, I saw "This is It" with a friend and that respect deepened.
However, on our way back from China, we were struck by how many celebrities died all around the same time. And, poor Farrah had the misfortune to die on the same day. Nobody remembers her!
I mean no disrespect to the memory of Michael Jackson, but likes other posters, I have no memory of the event because it was not important to me either. The Challenger accident, 9/11, those are real events that are etched in my memory and the nation's conscience, not the untimely death of some entertainer.
On that same vein, I still do not get the obsession over his death, neither then nor now. I suppose it goes to show that pop culture is more important to some Americans than the things that ought to really matter.
Kept changing the stations. It was ok for a while b/c I genuinely like his music. But after a while I needed a break. We had CDs and a screaming nearly 2 year old to take my mind off
To the other posters: I would not remember what I was doing except it coincided with my trip over here .
