My son is a cellist......
My son is a cellist who plays at weddings. What do you guys think is the best way for him to get him noticed in the Charlotte area? He just graduated from App State and all his contacts are up that way.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!!

I would think getting to know wedding planners and advertising at wedding shops / boutiques would be a good idea. There is a Bridal Show at the Merchandise Mart also, I think. I think referrals are also good so maybe offering to play for free or a reduced rate at a few weddings would be a good idea

Record himself on you tube and display on facebook as well.
Also to get himself noticed a couple of free charity events would help. (which is a great thing to do as well)

Thanks y'all. He is already on youtube but I'm not sure how recent the recordings are. He did a double major in Business and Music (Performance Major) and I'm kinda bursting with sickening motherly pride! LOL Oh, and in 4 years no less! LOL
He used to work at Harris Teeter, the one on Rea Road and played at Christmastime a few years ago...I think he did the same at Morrowcroft as well. Be nice if someone remembered him from that LOL!!
That's a great idea about the wedding planners! That's one I hadn't thought of!
Thanks again!

On the youtubes you can edit the tags of video add things like wedding music etc. Add all existing
Youtubes to your city-data blog
Can you post one of the youtubes here I like to hear him play. Thanks

why not post on craigslist? There are two places on Craigslist where this kinda thing can go.
1. Event Services ( charlotte event services classifieds - craigslist)
2. Musicians ( charlotte musicians classifieds - craigslist)
And, in harristeeter or wherever he plays, make sure to pass on business cards and also leave some at the store incase someone asks the store for them later.
Come up with a easy website name and have a website (example: CharlotteWeddingMusician.com), a simple one which maybe just gives the link to the youtube video and gives out contact number and some information. Am thinking, giving his education, coming up with a simple website (if he already hasnt) would not be hard at all for him.
(Psst: GoDaddy is offering New Website registrations for $0.99 for 1 year with code INDY2010)
Also, if he plays anywhere in public or for charity, it helps if he can keep a placard or a signboard with the name of the website.
Goodluck!
He can

Definitely make use of YouTube and Facebook. As someone else mentioned, the tags you put on the video are key to getting hits. So use - Charlotte, Charlotte weddings, Wedding entertainment, etc.
Also, wedding photographers are a good source to contact and give info to - they can always recommend someone when working with clients.
In addition, contact EVENT PLANNERS in the region. Remember - corporate events often include someone playing in the background - especially arts events.
I would also make contact with music majors at the various colleges - and see about putting together a small ensemble for special events, make up business cards for the "group" and hand those out.
GOOD LUCK! And congrats to your son on finishing his studies!

My son took music lessons for both saxophone and guitar. What about contacting some of the groups/people that offer lessons? I don't know if he would be willing to teach but the guys that taught my son were always discussing some sort of gig they were preparing for.
BTW - my son is preparing for his first year at Appalachian!

Sandy - You should be a proud mamma! Those two clips were a pleasure to listen to. Here's hoping Yo-Yo Ma might consider early retirement!
