Default Cleveland County could get 400-employee paper plant

An unidentified paper company could open a 400-employee factory in Cleveland County as a result of an incentives package given tentative approval this week in the state Senate, according to Sen. David Hoyle, D-Gastonia. The package includes $39 million for four companies that have promised more than 1,500 new jobs.

Almost the same thing in the Shelby Star, Sunny. Where in Cleveland County is the big question, although I think these plants are usually located on rivers. 400 jobs? I think so. This is in the Shelby version. The bills detail incentives for an “eligible Internet datacenter,” paper-from-pulp manufacturing and turbine manufacturing. No company names are mentioned in either version.

I'd be suspicious that it might be out in the western portion of the county, which won't effect much in the eastern part of the county or Gaston County except that those people won't come here looking for jobs, which then drives people from here towards Charlotte.

Sunny, eastern Cleveland County & the western part of the county are totally different.

However, the mill closures have forced all people toward Charlotte. The more businesses that locate outside of Charlotte, the better. Ultimately, it takes pressure off Charlotte.

Plenty of people in Kings Mountain (city & unincorporated) commute to Charlotte. Quite a few commute to Hickory & Spartanburg, but Charlotte & Gastonia are the main destinations.

If the paper mill/plant goes into western Cleveland County, people from here are unlikely to go there, but it keeps those people out of the mix here for local jobs, which ultimately benefits people looking for work east of here.

This could be a plant that recycles paper, rather than one that starts with wood. A lot less stinky if so, and much easier to get environmental permits.

Hard to say. . . What do you think of my guess that it'll go to the western part of the county? I don't mean Boiling Springs. Maybe somewhere between Shelby & Caser?
